I have a 100 year old or so DA revolver with a 6" barrel, what do you think an average price to re-blue this gun would be?
Thanks!

Base cost is generally about $200.00 plus freight both ways.

What make and model is it? Does it have a story behind it? A few years ago I sent my 6 inch Colt Python to Colt to be reblued. They charged me $165 for the job. The cost today should be right around $200 as mmcbeat said. May be slightly more but not by much.

If you shop around, a good professional job runs anywhere from $125. to $200.
Here's some places that ARE professional and don't ruin good guns by over polishing and rounding off sharp edges, or leave ripples in flats:

There are others, BUT, make sure you check their references. Anyone can set up a bluing outfit, but it takes years of experience to develop the skills needed to do good polishing.
About 98% of a good blue job IS the polishing.

If you believe it to be of collector value you might consider sending it to the manufacturer for refinish. Keep the bill of sale. You might loose some value getting it refinished, but you will loose less this way.

It was my great-grandmother's and it is an old Colt Police Positive in .38 s&w (new police or about a half dozen other names) The gun isn't worth much money but is pretty important to me. I have other firearms that I enjoy shooting so this one is pretty much an heirloom (though I will still fire it).
I also have an early savage 20 gauge that I plan to have refinished, again the gun isn't anything special to a collector but it was my grandfathers and thus is important to me.

Hello
I Can't speak for Colt or Ruger as far as Factory re-bluing goes because I only have S&W revolver's, But I will share with you that S&W does not have any refinishing People that can do the Deep Black shinny style bluing any more. They recently retired their last refinisher that did the High level bluing and are only offering Matte soft style bluing. for finishes. I had this 1948 K-22 I wanted to refinish with a High Polished Bluing and sent it to Ford's in Florida for the bluing. It came back flawless and they are the Only refinisher I have heard of that offer's a full one Year warranty on their work. I highly recommend them and will include a Link to their Web Page at the end of this message. The revolver shown had the factory Matte bluing and several Pit's as well. here is a before and after shot of what it Looked like and how it came out. You be the Judge. Hammer It
