Is 38 special +P ammo suitable for a S&W 10-5? I don't really understand the +P designation. Thanks

Plus P ammo is indeed suitable for you Model 10-5. Plus P means the round is loaded to higher pressure than standard. In .38 Special, standard pressure maximizes at 17,000 psi and the maximum for plus P has long been 18,500 psi. There are some reports that plus P now is goes to a maximum of 20,000 psi but I can't confirm that. The highest pressure plus P loads will probably produce between 18,000 and 20,000 psi so the pressure is increased between 10 and 20 percent, approximately. Not a problem with your 10-5. Of course, increasing power causes some increase in wear, but that's true of everything. It is perfectly safe and recommended for defense use.
