I know there is a wide variety of exotic 12ga. ammo out there but has anyone ever heard of armor piercing slugs? What about FMJ bullets in a sabot-slug?
I think a 12 GA tactical would be the best choice for a trunk gun for all but the most extreme situations and having AP slugs would even fix most of those short-comings.

Just what armor are you anticipating needing to pierce with a 12 ga AP slug?

While it's not an "AP" round, the Brenneke magnum gold slug is an amazing penetrator. It's cast much harder than a typical foster slug and delivers about over 3000 ft/lbs of energy. I wouldn't expect it to penetrate like a .30 cal AP round but they'll blow through hardwood tree trunks like they're made of balsa.
Kicks like a mule too.

I don't think anyone has ever made an armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot (APFSDS) round for the 12ga. It seems like it would work, but the only purpose-built AP shotgun round that I know of is this shaped-charge deal that is currently being tested.

Evan Marshall says the Breneke original slugs penetrate car bodies real well from many angles. Real truck stoppers.

12g slugs are rather AP'ish anyway...
