Katrina was about as close to a SHTF situation as we have ever seen, and it was SHTF for those who went through it. I am trying to decide if my shotgun is sufficient for such an occurrence, or if something more is needed.

While there were plenty of occasions of homeowners standing guard and brandishing weapons to scare off those looking for easy prey, how many actual gun battles happened?

Here are a few links describing situations that homeowners found themselves in during Katrina:

Does anyone have links to news stories or accounts of actual gun battles? If deterrence or a couple of shots is all that is necessary to keep the bad guys away, then a shotgun is enough, but if there were sustained exchanges, then I might reconsider.

Mods, if this thread is inappropriate, then I apologize ahead of time.
Thanks.

if you had a shotgun and were roaring and firing into the air... they wouldnt go for your television, I think you're imagining massive gangs and they would only try it if they knew you had something worth dying for.

According to friends that were there in the midst of it all from rather early on, all of the extended/extensive "gun battles" they are aware of occurred either between the police and the BGs or different groups of BGs fighting each other. To the best of their knowledge there were no extended firefights involving business or home defenders. The shotgun is plenty. Besides, if there are enough BGs attacking that you can't handle them with the shotgun odds are you won't be able to handle them with a rifle either.

Sorry Shappy, but it is a SHTF thread. Your concerns are valid up to a point, but these threads invariably end up going off the deep end. We'd rather avoid that from the very beginning.
