Hey all, I've been reading the forums off and on. I guess sort of a lurker when I have a few extra minutes away from family and work. Any ways, My question is has anyone experienced a moment where something like a sixth sense has saved you from even needing to draw your weapon?

I live in a fairly nice city neighborhood, though crime rate is skyrocketing everywhere in Philly. Recently I was walking home at night when I heard loud music which I gave my attention to. I noticed a man in a car who seemed to be staring and rubber necking me as he slowly drove by. Quickly my senses became alert and even more so when I seen him pull over along my side of the sidewalk.

Now Philadelphia's sidewalks are not that big, maybe a six foot walkway between the houses brick fronts and the parked cars along the curb. Suddenly a sort of danger alarm went off in my head. For me to walk by this mans car would, and him having a weapon ready would put me at a complete disadvantage, not to mention no cover. I never had any type of training, but instinctively knew this could turn bad if I gamble and blindly walk by his driver side window. Rather then doing that I decided to go a block out of my way and ducked down a small side street and bypassed him.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Where a quick gut reaction may have been the best defense? I could of easily gambled and maybe readied my .38 before walking by, but I believe just getting the hell away was better.

What you describe is situational awareness, and you were wise to avoid the situation. Good job.

You did the right thing. A few blocks of detour is a heckuva lot better than being involved in a gunfight.

Always, always listen to that sixth sense. Stay alert.

"The Gift of Fear: And Other Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence" by Gavin De Becker covers this:

Yeah, De Beckers book is very good for pointing out the little things that set off our inner warnings. He is an anti, but that doesn't change much of what he has to say.
