I'd like to go to some local competitions here in Dallas. How do I find out what's where and when?

I used this site to find one in my local area. Check your regional area/find a club section. Here: http://www.uspsa.com/

What kind of competitions would you like to compete in competitively?
NRA controls bullseye rifle and pistol from 50 foot gallery to 1000 yards, and some of the metallic silhouette; PPC if you are a cop but not if you are an American Commoner; and now Action Pistol as was Bianchi Cup.
USPSA and IDPA are the run 'n gun matches that we used to call Combat Matches.
ATA and NSSA let you wring out your shotguns.
Dallas is a big town, you can probably find most if not all of the above.
What do you want to do?

How about Dallas Action Pistol Shooters?
http://www.dallaspistol.com/DAPS/
There are others listed at
http://www.idpa.com/clublist.asp?state=TX
and go to
http://www.uspsa.org/
and click on "Where Can I Find A Match?"
but I don't know how close any given club might be to Dallas.

The Dallas Pistol Club is a private range in Carrollton (Luna Rd & Belt Line Rd). The weekend matches (steel plates, tactical/practical-IDPA 'like') are open to the public - it'll cost you about $10 for the match. Draws from holster and shooting while moving are permitted. Join the club and you can practice whenever you want for free.

at the Elm Fork Shooting Range. This is the newest USPSA club in the area that is host to both IDPA and USPSA matches. Centrally located in Dallas.

Jacob's Plain Gun Club (in Greenville) hosts IDPA and USPSA matches. This one requires a bit more drive time, but this new club puts on the highest round-count USPSA matches in North Texas.

Web forum and local match calendar of events. Videos of IDPA and USPSA matches as well.
Wherever you choose to shoot - stay safe, have fun, and welcome!

Cool, someone in Dallas. What clubs are you a member of? I'm going to try to visit a few matches before I enter one.

Joe, if you are going to drive to a match, take your gun and shoot it. Tell them that you are new and they will take care of you. You will be squadded with a number of shooters, so they will put you last on the squad to shoot, and you will have plenty of time to see whats going on. Nothing to be afraid of, everyone was in your shoes at one time, so no one expects you to excell.

Joe,
I agree 100% with Ken O's comments. Absolutely bring your shooting gear when you come to a match. You'll kick yourself afterwards if you don't. Seeing all the other folks shooting & having fun is very infectious...bring your stuff.:) And if you forget something, or discover that you don't have everything that you need, you'll usually find folks falling over themselves offering to let you use their spare gear.
There's a Dallas USPSA match this Saturday @ 10am. www.dallaspistol.com has directions to the club. I'll be there if I'm not working on Saturday. PM me or drop me an email & I'll give you my cell# to call. I'll be glad to give you the scoop on many of the area pistol competitions.
