What do you guys think of a .308 FN FAL rifle. How do you think it compares to a .308 RPK?

FN-FAL is the best main battle rifle ever built.Parts are easy to get and cheap.Easy to clean,adjustable gas system and so on.Accuracy is with my two, inch and half at 100 yards.This is with mil surplus ammo.If you have any questions feel free to email me.

FALs are nice to shoot with the reduced reciol of the gas system.

Garands are gas too. Why do they kick twice as hard as a FAL?

Garands need nearly full breech pressure 1 inch from the muzzle in order to reload. In fact in the Normany landings, water would get in the ports and the gun would fire, but not reload itself, and guns threw them away initially thinking they were jammed, but they really weren't, they just needed to be recocked each time. That gas port is touchy, you've gotta have just the right load and a very efficient firing. That's a lot of why it kicks so much I think. Also the FAL has a top gas port, and the Garand has a lower port. In my experience, lower port guns kick and climb more

Took me a long time to come over but now I agree with beemerb on the merits of the FN FAL.

As to recoil, it must be a relative thing. My first issue military rifle was the 03 springfield, I didn't think much of the recoil because I was used to shootin much heavier loads in lighter rifles. Then I was issued the M1 Garand and thought the recoil was nearly zero. Even doin work with 180 grain up to 220 grain full house loads, the Garand seemed to be a pussycat and stone reliable.

Took me a long time to accept the .308 as bein anything other than a wimp cartridge. Now I realize that with bullet weights in the 150 to 170gr area it is every bit as good as the 30-06 cartridge. Can't put 220s out at 2600fps but in a combat situation, who cares.

Sam, follow me, I know a shortcut

The only beef I have is with the Angle of the pistol grip. I have long arms and my wrist ends up at a weird angle when holding the FAL. Other than that, I agree with everybody else.

bagerarms;
If you have a plastic stocked FN there are, I think,4 different buttplates for them.Each is a different thickness for different arm lengths.
