how many of you guys use a blackhawk for hunting?

i want to hunt with a 357 and use it as a range gun.

What do you think will be better a gp100 or a blackhawk or something equal to a blackhawk a like a taurus model or something like that?
or a taurus like this

I use Bisleys deer hunting. With the heavy calibers you can get off a second shot with a single action about as fast as with a double action.

I use primarily a 480 Super Redhawk for hunting whitetails. I sometimes use a Model 57 depending on conditions and so forth. I know you have heard or read this a lot of times, but the 357 is marginal for deer hunting in terms of power. I would look at the Ruger Hunter series if you like single actions since they are ready for mounting a scope.

i took my 6" .357 blackhawk for a walk in the woods quite a few times before i traded it. was looking for deer, didn't see any, but i wouldn't have been undergunned if i did. fun gun to plink cans with.

I don't feel undergunned with my 6.5" Old Model Blackhawk in .357. I use Cor Bon 180gr jacketed soft points. Keep your shots reasonable and you'll have no problems. When I pistol hunt I treat it like bow hunting and keep the distances similar (30-35yds). I use 50yds as my absolute maximum for deer with any pistol basically because I hunt open sights and my peepers ain't peepin' like they used to.

I took my first deer (with a handgun) with my 7.5" Bisley Blackhawk (.44mag) this year. 240gr. jhp did not expand (nose pinched shut) but deer fell within 35 yards of where he was shot anyway.

Many years ago I used a 41 mag. Blackhawk extensivley while hunting in AZ for Deer, Feral Hogs and Javelina. It never failed me as long as I did my job and I felt it easier to carry than my Redhawk. I think the Blackhawk is an excellent field gun.

If you are looking specifically for something to hunt with, I wouldn't go any less than 41Mag. Hunting deer-sized game with a 357Mag requires a lot of skill and the mind-set to pass on bad shots that can normally be made with larger calibers. I typically only use JHPs for deer and take broadside shots only when using a 357Mag. The 357 is going to rely more on expansion to get the job done. With a 44Mag you can punch through the shoulder, which typically sacrifices expansion because you're starting off with a .43 caliber bullet. I've hunted deer with 357 because I typically always have it with me. I would much rather have something larger though if I can help it. For hogs I wouldn't go any less 41Mag. The saying for hunting is at least 200gr, at least 1000fps, and a caliber of at least .40 will give you good results. For 357Mag you want a deep penetrating JHP. I like the 158gr. Speer GD load. Double Tap makes a load that does 1400fps from a 4" revolver using the Speer GD bullet. It penetrates about 18-19" and consistently expands to about .54-.56, which is similar performance to typical 30-30 loads. The 357Mag benefits greatly from the longer barrels. Try to use at least a 6" barrel for hunting purposes. More power and better accuracy in most people's hands.

I have hunted with the same Ruger New Model .45 Long Colt for 25 years. I have shot squirrels, rabbits, armadillos, opposums, snakes, a horse (don't ask about the horse), but never had a good clean shot at a deer.

With my pet hot handload, it will shoot a 1.25 inch group from a sandbag rest at 25 yards. The action is velvet smooth with an impreccable trigger pull (Wolfe trigger spring, sear work with all contact parts mirror polished and custom Herrets grips). It is my all time favorite revolver.

I bought it brand new for $149.00 a LONG time ago

A Blackhawk will give you a lifetime of excellent service.

I hunt with a 4-5/8 inch 45 Colt New Model Blackhawk. It is a pleasure to carry and quite accurate. Deer seem to drop very well for this antique cartridge.
