Is it possible to lighten the trigger pull and smooth it out? Would this be something any gunsmith could do?

Sambonator, yes a gunsmith could help you. If nothing else by polishing the internals he can make the pull much smoother and a smoother pull almost always translates into a lighter feeling, if not actually lighter, trigger pull.
