View Full Version : AR15 front sight TOWER removal & mod to setscrews?

I was trying to sight in an AR and it requires 18 clicks of windage at 100 yards. I need the detailed procedure for removing the pins from the front sight tower in order to rotate it.
But as long as I've gone that far, how does one convert it to a setscrew arrangement? What size screw, what size drill & tap, etc?
Or might it be cheaper/better to just buy a setscrew type tower from DPMS or whoever?

The pins are tapered. Remove the pins as follows - lay the rifle on it's right side with muzzle facing left you will have to strike the pins sharply with the proper size punch. do not tap gently as this will peen the pins and you will have a serious problem.
That said you must realize that if you rotate the sight tower to far you will mis-aligned the gas port hole and have cycling problems.
I am not sure that the sight is the problem. other causes could be a bent barrel, a barrel that is out twisted in the upper receiver.
There is and old axiom in gun smithing do not do anything that can't be reversed until you are sure of the problem and it's cause
Good luck

Good point. The barrel itself is tapered, so is there a good inspection procedure to figure it out?
Dunno how I would hammer the pins back _in_ without shifting the sight tower, so I really want to convert to or buy the setscrew type.
I'm avoiding doing the math to figure out how many degrees shift 18 clicks amounts to.
18 clicks = 9 MOA.
Convert MOA to degrees, at the sight radius distance...

is your front sight tower canted or is it your barel extension....?
