Just took my Rossi 68 to the range for the first time on Saturday, and had a strange problem...

In single action, the hammer doesn't fall hard enough to make the primer go bang. The dent on the primer's backside is very shallow. Double action, it's fine.

Is this something a smith can fix, or do I just have to deal with it?

Coinneach, it's usually the other way around. It sounds as if your hammer may be rubbing against something in the back of the frame or the mainspring might be coming into contact with something. Physical inspection would determine the problem pretty quickly and I would think that any competent smith should be able to handle it. If you don't have anyone near you, e-mail me. George

Thanks, George. The mainspring and hammer appear to be clear, FWIW.

The owner of the range where I practice thought the problem was pretty odd, as well, but he duplicated it.. took a fresh cartridge, cocked the hammer, pulled the trigger, click. Pulled the trigger in DA, bang.

Knew I shoulda stayed with a slidegun... ;)
