View Full Version : 1911 SA Slide/Barrel play...

On my SA 1911 (a 91 model equivalent of the new MilSpec), when the slide in closed, you can push down on the barrel hood and it moves downward. I that this is not good. What is the fix? (fitted barrel link?).

Mine does that to but i noticed when it did it was pushing the slide back to
I think if it moved down without moving the slide back then it would be bad

DO NOT try to change the link to take that play out of your barrel; this is a common practice frowned upon by experienced pistolsmiths.
The problem is that the lower lugs which rest on the slide stop pin aren't resting fully on that pin - when it goes into battery it is above the pin. This is common with production guns and some shoot reasonably well like this - but it is not right.
There are two options:
1.Find someone with a supply of "take-off bbls" and try different ones to see if they are a better fit (TAKE THE LINK OUT BEFORE TRYING).
2. Fit a new bbl to the pistol (preferred) with the bbl fit by a PROFESSIONAL.
As I said, this is relatively common with production pistols particularly on the early clones which did not have the blessing of moddern CNC machining.
There are some smiths (?) who say, "the bbl ends up in the same position after each shot so what's the big deal" - they are in error - but it will not harm your gun to use it as is without a perfect bbl fit.
Good shooting Harry B.
P.S. Don't let anyone tell you to use a longer link - this will only increase the distance between the lower lugs and the slide stop pin.
