the 590 barrel is thicker for one thing.

The 590 has an 8+1 capacity and a 20in. barrel. The 500 (at least the HD model) has an 18.5in. barrel....and the 590 barrel actually heats up WAY more than the 500 barrel.....I have no idea why. The 500 can also use several different barrels (including a muzzle-loader barrel) while the 590 can't.

I have a 590A1 20" barrel, 8+1 cap. The A1 is important. It is the heavy military shotgun. NOT the same as a regular 590. That means it has a thicker(noticeably) barrel, metal trigger guard and safety button. The 590 and A1 both have the bayonet lug I believe as well. The 500 is a more cheapy-civilian version. No, I don't have a 500, but I've handled them at shows and it is just my opinion.

The 500 was designed as an all around civvie shotgun, and all 500 parts (except the barrels) are interchangeable. My 500 persuader does not feel any cheaper than my 590. (note: my 590, NOT 590A1) And the normal 590 has no bayonet lug.

I wonder if they make a military (A-1) version of the 590 Mariner. My mariner does not have combat (ghost ring) sights -- just a ball sight on the front of the barrel -- and the trigger guard and safety switch are plastic. I would prefer those to be metal, I'd prefer some combat sights, and I'd prefer a bayonet lug, now that I think about it. (Although I have a hard time envisioning a shotgun with a bayonet mounted. Anybody done this?) But I would not want to give up the marinecoat.

One nice thing about the 500 is that you can put different length barrels on it for hunting or trap shooting. With the 590A1, your pretty much stuck with the one heavy barrel.

What can I say? I got bored one day about four months ago and it has stayed on there since. BTW, that's a 590A1 with the 8+1 capacity.
