Who makes the best folding stock for a Mossberg 590?
I have seen photos of Choate and Knox stocks online... any know anything about them?
What is the advantage or disadvantage of a top folder versus a side folder?
I am looking for a stock that will mainly just make it easier to transport and stash the gun. I don't plan on firing it with the stock folded.

I've recently been looking into the purchase of a folding stock for my Mossy as well. I go out driving on forest roads alot and it'd make it alot handier with a folding stock.
I've handled alot of different stocks at gunshows and gunstores, etc, etc, and come down to two possible choices.
The Knoxx COPstock, I think it's called. One of the guys from Knoxx posts here and I'm sure he'll correct me if I got it wrong. It's like a metal wire stock that top-folds. Supposed to cut down on recoil as well as making the shotgun alot easier to store.
The other one I'd get is the metal Butler Creek side-folder. Solid construction, looks good, allows use of a side-saddle, and has a storage compartment in the pistol grip for screws or maybe some batteries if you have a fore-end light. They also make a synthetic folder that also holds two extra rounds, but I haven't been able to handle it, so I can't say how rugged it is, but it looks pretty good.
As a general rule, stay away from anything made by ATI. All garbage. Their top-folding "stocks", and side-folders and whatever that universal model is that fits any shotgun are all a joke.
Tac-Star generally makes pretty good shotgun accessories, although I've never liked their folding stocks. While I'm sure they're of pretty good quality, it just doesn't feel right.

The difference is with the folding stock you give up handling qualities for easy storage. With fixed stock you get a better cheek weld and faster mounting to the shoulder. Another consideration that concerns the Mossberg series- the top mounted safety can only be operated by removing a hand from the pistol grip. Some folders are cheap and tend to develop a rattle in a few hundred rounds while some remain rock solid. With the Mossberg series I would stick with the factory stock.

I examined a Knoxx COPStock on a used Remington a couple weeks ago. I was impressed with the solid feel/construction. The recoil dampening feature sounds nice, however, I haven't used one yet. It's pricier than most other folding stocks, but I'm still considering one.

There is an independent review of the Knoxx COPstock in the current (July 2005) issue of Guns Magazine. The reviewer liked it and confirms its sturdy contruction, lack of wobble and recoil reduction capabilities. You don't have to take my word for it. Check out the videos on the SpecOps page at www. knoxx.com (http://www. knoxx.com).

This is all just what i have read while searching for my own Mossberg 500
s
some people have noticed that while firing with the copstock the shotgun fires about 2' high at 50'. most people thought it was user error but the guy seemed pretty sure of himself and a few others noticed ther same thing. I figure its a bit pricey if your reducing accuracy that much for portability.
the ATI's are a no go. i've read less then great reviews about it overall feel, sturdiness, and resiliancy. it also covers the tang safety on a mossberg while it is in the folded position. im sure you can figure out why that might not be beneficial.
I havnt found much about the Choate top folder. Not many reveiws. From the looks of it there is room to get a thumb underneith to engage the safety. I dont think these are made to attach a rear ghost sight unfortunatly...something you can do with the ATI.
conclusion...i think i might look into the choate side folder...
at least for the mossberg 500

The Butler Creek folder is very sturdy, the lock mechanism is very solid and works smoothly. This folder clears the the ejection port, and there is a functional butt pad. Over all it seems to be a quality hard duty product that will allow a 500/590 to be made considerably more compact. Not all that fun to shoot with, and the cheek weld is not that comfortable. But, it is quite functional for what it was meant to do.

I have an ATI top folder. It is sturdy, locks up solidly in each position and I'm pretty certain it does not cover the safety (don't have it in front of me). I'm not saying other options aren't good too, just that the negative comments I see about ATI (from people who don;t seem to own them?) doesn't match what I see on mine.
Maybe an older design covered the safety?

I have tried the ATI side folding stock and this is my opinion:
Cheap plastic. I had to file an angle on the butt so I could use the "pump" without it catching on the butt. I had to glue the shoulder pad onto the butt to prevent it from flying off.
After the modifications and lots of use I bought a Butler Creek side folding stock and couldnt be more happy.
(FWIW; I used this on a 870 Marine)
