I have just recently aquierd a J.C HIGGENS model 20 12 GA shotgun. I know nothing about shotguns, so please bear with me . I have shot them before and the magazine tube on a pump gun held at least five shots. My pump shot gun will only hold 2 shells in the magazine tube. The tubes length suggests that it will hold five. I just wondered if this capacity is normal for this pump gun. It is chambered to 2.75 if that means anything.

More than likely, there is a "plug" in the magazine. This is used to reduce the capacity to 2 shells, the maximum allowed for hunting migratory waterfowl. Remove the magazine cap, held on either by screwing it on or by a screw (don't remember which on a Higgins) and the plug, often just a piece of wooden dowel, will come out along with the spring.

That worked there was a piece of wood (looked like a stick) was in the mag tube. It holds five shots now
