I was looking at buying a sight tool for an AK front site. The tool looks just like a beam clamp with the screw threads ground off. Any plumbers or electricians out there that have made there own with a beam clamp?

Somewhere on the gun forums within the last month or so, somebody had a post about making an AK tool from a beam clamp.

He bored one side out with a big enough hole to pass the sight drum, and just used a wrench on the bolt on the other side.

I'd go a little farther by soldering a brass pad on the bolt to protect the finish on the sight drum, and I'd probably drill the bolt for a small handle so I didn't have to carry a wrench.

AK Sight Tool

Whether you build or buy, make sure you have a STURDY yoke. This is the "C"-shaped part the tool that acts as the "anvil".

I had a SAR-1 that had the drum really frozen AND staked in the front sight frame and it bent the TAPCO tool like a wet noodle. In the end, I had to use an automotive steering wheel puller (much bigger screw AND stronger frame) with a mallet to get it loose. And even then, I had to totally remove the drum and reduce its diameter so it was no more than a snug fit.

Only then could I use the TAPCO tool (hammered back into shape). Not blaming TAPCO, just relating my experience.

Good luck,
