I just read the article on p20 in June '04.
Great and important article.
Actually it came at the right time as we are having some issues here in Norway.

In the paragraph about Australia, it says: "It cost the nation's taxpayers $500,000 (Australian)...
Is this figure corect?
To me is seems very very low. That is something like USD 350,000

I also miss hard numbers. The number of crimes pr 100,000 in each country before and after the prohibitions.
If you have any suggestion where I can find these figures I would be very greatful!

kobun-
That's Richard Stevens regular Legal/Political column. I take credit for that brainstorm, but not for his thought provoking pieces. i see your point. 500,000 Aus = $345,000 US.

I've emailed Richard and asked for clarification.
Standing by.

Damn fine catch, kobun.
Richard Stevens reply follows:
Rich,
A regrettable typographical error, for which I profusely apologize. Professor Gary Mauser quoted $500 million (Australian).

Wish I had caught that before submitting it. I'll redouble my self-editing efforts, especially with numbers.
