View Full Version : Another indication of my bias, or what I bought today...

Of course, this is all just an indication of the fanatical bias I have against Smith & Wesson and their guns, so please keep that in mind...
Went looking for .44 Special ammo today. Of course no one in Northern Virginia has it for a reasonable price (Blue Ridge has reloads for almost $25 a box? I don't think so!)
If you know Blue Ridge, you'll know that their prices are generally pretty obscene, but I amused myself by trolling the used cases...
A nice Model 15 for $395.
A .38/44 HD for $500.
A 4" Model 19 with a stupid Tasco red dot for $685???
Then what do I see? No, wait, that cant' be right... BUT IT IS!
A 6" S&W Model 19, very very nice shape, a 19-5, so it's just after the P&R was dropped, excellent trigger (someone's been in there for an action job), and the bluing is in EXCELLENT condition. The only problem, which for me isn't a problem, is that the front sight has been reduced considerably in thickness.
Nice gun, but I'm not going to buy it at the prices that Blue Ridge asks for its used guns, for God's sakes...
But wait a second... No, that can't be right? You're joking, right?
I'LL TAKE IT.
The price?
$200.
It was a consignment gun. It will be coming home in 2 weeks...
That makes Model 19 number 3. I now have the full set of standard barrel lengths, 2.5", 4", and 6".
That also makes my 5th S&W .357 Mag.
And my 12th S&W revolver over all.
This anti-S&W bias of mine is getting to be totally out of hand...

Nice catch Mike. Very good.
If the sight situation starts to bother you.....seems that the stock patridge blade on that one was 1/8" along with 1/8" notch in the rear blade. There was a 1/10 " inch rear blade available at one time.

Dan,
Yep, Blue Ridge's prices are just freaking obscene. I used to work there, and was offended even then. :)
The total price was $211 and change.
Because of Virginia's laws, I had to put it on lawaway.
I just got the .44 Special 2 weeks ago, so that's why I'm not set up for loading it yet. I load everything else, with the exception of .32 ACP and 9mm.
Sam,
Nope, I don't think the sight is going to bug me at all.
Now if I could only find one of the mythical Model 19s with an 8 3/8" barrel, I'd be very, very happy.

Mike, what VA law are you referring to?
Since it was a consignment, I assume you had to do the full background check, as opposed to face to face deal. So if that went through, then what caused the delay? Is there something special required because of the consignment?
I've bought about a half dozen guns since I moved to VA, but none required me to leave it after the paperwork cleared. Can you explain?

Mike,
VERY nice, congratulations . . . and an excellent price, too! I gave up on Blue Ridge some time ago, due to their prices, but I may have to return and search more deeply.

Snakelover,
I actually ran face first into two laws, one state, one local.
State was, of course, the 1 handgun in 30 days. I took delivery of my Model 24-3 exactly two weeks ago. I've got two weeks and 1 day until I can pick up a handgun, unless I want to try to go through the "multiple purchase bull scheissen" with the state police. Which, to get that form approved, would probably take THREE weeks.
The state check will be done when I actually take possession of the gun.
The local law was Fairfax County's 3-working day waiting period. A couple of the more communist counties in Northern Virginia have them. Until someone sues under the new state preemption law, I guess it's here to stay. That law was apparently passed back in the 1960s when everyone was afraid that some stoned hippies were going to get lucid, buy a handgun, then get stoned again and rob a bank.
Roy,
Don't make a special trip. I think it was dumbassed luck that I was there when that 19 was. You saw the prices that they were asking for the other guns, and most of the consignments (of which there were very few) were also stupidly priced.
I didn't ask how long it had been on consignment, but if it had been more than 5 days I'd be shocked.

"$200."
A man after my own heart! :D
Good find. I used to not be fond of the 6" S&W revolvers, but having picked up some recently I can now see the beauty in them.
And a 19 in any length is one terrrific gun.

I'm not a big fan of the 6" revolver either, Frosty.
But that doesn't stop me from having the following 6" or so guns...
Model 28
Model 24-3
Model of 1917 military
now the 19 will be joining those.

One handgun in 30 DAYS! Jeeeesussss H., what's next? One gun a year? What an effed up law. I'm glad I live in a state where the only limit on my firearms purchases is my budget (and all of the idiotic federal firearms laws). Man, I sure feel for you, but it sounds as if you did well with that Model 19. Best of luck with it.

Mike: "Because of Virginia's laws, I had to put it on lawaway."
Was that a typo or the clever coining of a new word?

A parting legacy of Virginia's only African-American governor, a Democrat, naturally, and the at-that-time rabidly Democrat State House and Senate.
After that idiot, we had two Republican Governors, Republicans captured both the state house and senate, and Virginia now has two Republican senators in Washington.
Life couldn't be any more grand.
Well, except that we have an idiotic Democrat for Gov. again, but at least HCI's hand-picked nightmare for Attorney General looked like a slaughtered pig by 10 p.m. on election night...

Way to go,Mike.I know the feeling all to well.I was at the local shop today, sighting in the 2 Smiths I got last week, and one of the employees mentioned that they had just got a model 20 in the previous day.Turns out to be an early postwar 38-44 HD,5 screw,4 inch barrel, excellent condition except for the cylinder, which S&W has just replaced.Price-$239.So it too is now on layaway.Might be a good candidate for a Bowen conversion to .45 Colt.
God,I hate Smith & Wesson!

You should have taken credit for the new word. It's a good one for VA and other states of the one-gun-a-month variety.

"But that doesn't stop me from having the following 6" or so guns... "
My only 6 inch S&W's are a 14-3 and a K-22 Masterpiece. Everything else is of the 4", 3.5", or 2" variety.
I think.
Jeepers! I have finally lost track. Maybe I had better take this over to the "Gun Nut" thread.

Ok, let's go through the list...
Model 19, 2.5"
Model 19, 4"
Model 19, 6" (this one is coming in 2 weeks)
Model 28, 4"
Model 28, 6"
Model 10, 4" (I sold this one about a year ago to a friend)
Model 36, 3" (I sold this one to a friend's father, who wanted a house gun. I thought I would like the nickle finish, but the longer I had it, the less I liked it)
Model 38, 2"
Model 042, 2"
Model 58, 4"
Model of 1917, 5.5" (I think that's the standard length)
Model 24-3, 6.5"
Regulation Police, 4"
Hey, that's 13 Smith & Wesson revolvers that I've purchased over the years.
Jesus, I can't believe how biased I am against Smith & Wesson...

Never said you didn't like the old ones.
Just that you are unfair to the new ones because of your boycott "stuff", and that you cannot discuss new Smiths without slamming them unfairly because of it.
You'll get no disagreement from me about how great the oldies are.
You've got some gems. So do I. So do a lot of people here.
Some of theirs/mine happen to be late models.

I ticked through the list of what I need S&W revolver wise...
Holy hell, I'm going to be broke if I can't break this bias!
Model 25 in .45 Long Colt
HE 4th Model in .32-20
Triple Lock in .44 Special or .45 Bias
J & K frame .22s
Model 10 light barrel
Model 12, both 2" and 4"
Model 38
Model 49
Model 20
And that's just the tip of the freaking iceberg...
But, as I say, if this be bias, make the most of it!

Mike,
You are getting absurd.
The "joke" is getting old
Nobody said you were biased against the old guns.
Just your "boycott guns".
Get it?
