Picked up a used 686 today. I pesonally hate the rubber grips that come on the 2 1/2's. So I take the grips off and it turns out the grip frame has the same profile as a 2 1/2 mod 19. So I slap on a pair of grips I got layin around and now I'm happy as clam.

Yeah, they fit in theory, but look at those on this gun... the front strap and part of the butt are exposed. S&W fits grips to the particular gun, and only by chance does one set of grips fit really well on another gun. The Pachmayr and other good rubber models seem to allow for minor frame differences, and custom grip makers can exactly fit new grips, if they have the gun. I don't want to ship off my guns, so I generally use rubber, unless I really like the grips that came on a used S&W.

I can't believe that you think a S&W 586 is better looking than a S&W 686, especially a 686 with wood grips as Popeye's. I guess that old expression "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" rings true

You can find tyler T here:http://www.t-grips.com/
They were popular years ago. If there's an older gun shop in your area call and ask if they got any laying around.

I have a 2.5" 686 with Rosewood finger grooved wooden grips and this beauty is one of my favorite revolvers. I've had more comments on how nice it looks, when I wear it on duty in a high rise thumb break basketweave Safariland holster.

ProdigalShooter: A guy with the handle ATTICUS has a T-grip for sale on the for sale portion of this site. 15 bucks. Don't know him, not sure what T-grips go for, and not sure what gun it's for, but I thought I'd mention it since I saw your post.
