AK47 Question

Does anybody know if the Russian military still uses the AK47 at all? I know that the AK74 is pretty much their main rifle now, but is the AK47 still being used by any particular units? I have wondered this for a while but never got to finding out the answer, so it would be an interesting thing to know.

Yes they do. Both their POGs (rear echelon) and ceremonial units still use 7.62 variants. Some special police (part of the Russian military) use them as well.

Do they use AK-47s or AKMs? I would think that any AK-47s out there would be pretty old rifles.

They use AKMs, AKMLs, as well as AKMLPs. Probably other variants as well but those are the ones I've seen them using in the recent Pravda news clips.

The Kalashnikov AK-12 is the newest derivative of the Soviet/Russian AK-47 series of assault rifles and is proposed for general issue to Russia's armed forces in standard 5.45x39 caliber.
It has a picatinny rail --- allowing the attachment of modular accessories, including advanced optical sight illuminators, flashlights, vertical foregrips, bipods and grenade launchers.

Firing modes include: safe, semi, 3 round burst.

Spetsnaz still uses the AKM as well. Kinda like our special forces still using the M-14. Somethings just don't die.

An honest question. I know AKM production started around 1959, but wasn't sure if AK-47 production ended that same year or continued alongside the AKM for a while.

I haven't seen any footage of units using milled AKs since the Afghan war; my guess is the commies melted those guns down for scrap like they did with most of their BMP-1s and BMP-2s...

Milled ak-47 guns were stopped being produced in Russia in about 68ish. The Russians had quit working with China on milled AK-47 in 1968. Russia had already started developing the AKM after that. Russia China relations were strained at that time and Russia left the Chinese hanging after that. They would not allow China to get new AK-74's after this time period. There was a " crossover" period during this time were regular units were still receiving akm guns and special units started getting the new AK-74's.
