Thoughts on "modern" remington...looking at a 700 XCR rifle.

I am thinking of dropping some cash on an XCR rifle before deer season and I have read a lot of hit and miss stuff concerning current remington quality control. What are your opinions?

Also, what do you think of the XCR? Looking for something corrosion proof.

Current quality control is :barf: in my opinion... My last three remingtons have had issues... Two wingmasters that didn't work and a 700 CDL that will not shoot better than 6 inches at 100 yards... My dealer who I know personally, said that he is tired of their BS and lack of Q/C... He's a full line dealer and one of the biggest volume stores in this part of the state... This is out of his mouth... "As long as it goes boom and doesn't blow up in the shooters face, Remington doesn't care." This has been my experience with them, trying to get problems solved and sending stuff back only to have it returned with the problems not rectified...

I think that the FN-made Winchesters are putting their bet possible product out. The new South Carolina plant is probably making the best M70 of all time right now. The way to correct Remington's issues is to deny them any sales. Buy a Browning-Winchester.

I guess it is the luck of the draw.

I have a 30 year old 700BDL getting a new barrel now and a new 700P .308 that I have been shooting for about 6 months now. I have not had issues with either one. I did have a trigger job done on the 700P and it is a very good shooter.

I hope you get the firearms sorted out. My experience with Remington has been positive.

The Remington really had my eye, but I decided to go with a Browning X-bolt. The XCR seemed nice but I was able to pick this one up for $100 less and it seems to be every bit as nice although it has more plastic on it than I was expecting. Thanks for the replies.

I considered the XCR, but went with the synthetic/stainless SPS instead. I could not justify the extra expense of the XCR - if synthetic and stainless ain't tough enough, I ain't going out in it anyway...

I have an XCR chambered in 30-06. It is a tack driver for what is considered a hunting rifle. I can put 5 shots in the size of dime on a good day. On a normal day it will put 5 in the size of a nickle. My wife has a ADL in .243 that we bought the same time as my XCR and it shoots just as well. No problems with either of them.

I had an XCR in .30-06 for about 6 months. Sold it, and now I REALLY wish I hadn't.
Super smooth action, as should be expected from the model 700. 3 shot 165gr. Nosler BT's grouped into just under an inch @ 100 yards.

I wasn't wild about the stock. The rubberized sections on the grip and forarm were nice. Made it very easy to hold onto in wet weather....but the rest of the stock was pretty lousy.

I wish I had kept it and swapped the stock out for something by McMillan or another quality aftermarket maker.

You said you wanted "something corrosion PROOF". Stainless gives you some advantages over blued steel......but this "Trinyte" (can't remember exact spelling) is supposed to absolutely awsome at resisting rust.

If you want a rifle that will give you ZERO maintenance needed on metal work....this is your guy

You do hear alot about Rem quality control these days, but I have had no problems with my new 700 SPS varmint it will shoot sub MOA.

I recently picked up an XCR Compact Tactical and it's a .5" gun. Very good shooter. Best group so far measured .402" for 3 shots @ 100 yds.

i second thye luck of the draw theory. in the past year i purchased two 257 roberts rifles. one ruger hawkeye, one rem cdl. the ruger was junk, the rem was perfect. fwiw, bobn

I bought a Remington 700 CDL about a month ago and it's a great shooter and everything I hoped for. I guess I just got lucky but it shoots sub MOA at 100 yards and handles stout reloads. I'm shooting 200 grain Hornady's at 2800 FPS which is only 100 FPS less then I'm shooting my 300 Win mag with 190 grain bullets.

i bought a Remington 700 ADL chambered in 25-06 here not to long ago and it is a tackdriver....love the gun...at 100 yards with 117gr factory loaded Federals its holding a 3/4" group with 3 shots the gun will outshoot me by a longshot....so far this one wont go no where for a long time and it wont be the last 700 ill have i know that...next one is gonna be in a varmit caliber like a 22-250

Perhaps part of the issue with reports on Remington's quality control issues is that often, people don't say anything unless there's something wrong with their rifle.

1500 people could buy a rifle. If say, 30 of those (2%) have major problems and everyone complains, it may seem like a lot, but you never hear about the remainin 1470 that worked just fine.

I just had a Remington 700BDL in 22-250 and had a new Douglas Stainless Steel tube put on it. I got it back yesterday and shot it to see how the rifle worked. I posted the pics of the target on another thread on the forum, "Best Groups."

Take a look. 18 shots in an area just slightly over the size of a quarter. Shot new Remington brass, Sierra 52 gr. HPBT and 33.7 gr. of IMR4064.

No...you cannot buy the rifle from me
