View Full Version : MAJOR complaint about this board.

I just accidently included one too many smiley in a LONG post.

I got the error message, hit back, and the entire message was wiped out.

Moderators: please, either fix this problem where it deletes the text, or remove the limit. I don't care which. The way it is set up now is simply wrong, it treats us as children and it vandalizes out efforts to use the system.

Same here, Jim. :)

Jim-
I'm sorry for the problem. However, I don't see a limit that can be set in the Control Panel. This appears to be a software issue...and we don't write the code. We only lease it. I'll look into it and see if we can arrange a fix.

OK, I found it.
Smilies are considered images like any other image code. The CP limited these to 15 per post. I've upped it to 25. Certainly this is high enough, even for long posts.

Rich, I've been limited to either three or four!!! Jeez, if the limit was 15, I wouldn't have worried about it.

OK, now it'll take six. That's a first.

I'm going to go back to the General forum, see if it works there.

It was never lower than 15, but remember: this means 25 total [image] codes.

When workin on a complicated post or when the net is naughty, I open a spare winder to save stuff in. Eliminates the back/erase syndrome and helps prevent double taps.

Dammit, listen to what I'm saying: the system was telling me I had too many, when all I had was FOUR. And that's just plain ol' system smileys, and no graphics via IMG codes or anything else.

OF COURSE I could stay under a limit of 15 but that is NOT what the limit was.

I, too, lost a long and involved post just the other day when I tried to include 4 faces.

I was NOT amused...

Yes, I went through the FULL range of emotions... :D

I could only use 3 in every post, if you tried 4 it would say I passed my limit. I am glad you changed it.:) :) :) :) ;) :D

I believe you're right Jim. There was some discussion about the smiley/IMG limit just a short while ago. It was said then that the limit was 3.

Everyone should pay close attention to what Sam said. It is very wise to copy the text of a long post to your clipboard or open a separate window with the text before hitting the Submit button, not just here on TFL, but on any internet site where you post. There's a whole lot more than just the smiley limit that can go wrong when you least expect it.

That said I agree with Jim that the text should not be thrown out when any error condition is encountered, that's just bad programming. But all complaints of a programming nature should go to vBulletin, not to us. We use it, we don't write it. We are prey to the same pitfalls as evryone else.

[A perfect example of why to copy your text just happened to me! While I was composing this, my ISP decided that I wasn't paying attention and so they disconnected me. I didn't notice until I had hit the submit button. Having a copy in the clipboard meant I didn't have to retype all of the above.]

I'm sorry, Mal? Did you say something?

I wasn't paying attention, and I guess I disconnected. :)

I've been disconnected for years.

Doin a lot of auction listings will force you to keep a copy of everything. Nuttin like workin your butt off with a carefully worded description, proof read, spell checked.....and lose it into cyberspace when you hit submit.

Yeah, I've lost some really good posts. I've also begun keeping a copy of long posts in notebook just in case.

I've lost posts and returned to the blank message box. A refresh sometimes gets it back (from cache?).
