I admit that I know close to nothing about shotguns, but I recently picked up a Mossy 500 'cause I figured I needed one. So now I have a whole new world of shooting to explore. Could someone please explain to me the difference between skeet, trap, etc or point me to a webpage which may help a beginer such as myself?

Thanx
Loch

For starters, Loch, you might check out the following links:

http://www.shotgunsports.com/

Follow these links to those of clubs in your area and arrange a visit. Shotgunners are like all shooters -- they love to talk about their sport, especially to newbies. Have fun!!!

Loch, the only stupid questions are those that aren't asked.

Before you form any bad habits,I strongly recommend getting some training. Bad habits are harder to stop than start.

Some old threads here about mounting and technique will give you some good, reliable input. Handguns are the only type of firearm with more mis-info and myths than shotguns.

And while shotgunners tend to be a helpful bunch, some good'uns do not know WHY they're good.
Get instruction from a trained and competent instructor.

Finally, start off with light loads, 2 3/4 dram Equivalent, 1 oz loads with 7 1/2 or 8 shot are good choices for a 12 ga.

I went through trying to figure this out myself recently. Here's what I found.

Skeet. There are 8 shooting stations formed in a semicircle. There are 2 clay launching houses, one on the left by the first station and one on the right by the far right station. The one on the left I believe is higher than the right and basically the clays are thrown across your field of view (either right to left or left to right). When you are at the first and far right station, clays will be going almost directly away or toward you.

Trap. There are 5 stations. basic trap is from 16 yards behind the trap house. the five stations are relatively close to each other (probably covering about 15-25 degrees). The trap house basically throws birds away from you at slightly varying angles.

Sporting clays. Golf with a shotgun. Most like simulated hunting. You go around to different stations and birds of differing sizes are presented in different ways like flushing wild game (along ground, going up and away, up and across, startin up in a tree, etc.)

I think those are the major points. Hopefully I got them right, but I'm still new at this myself.

That's basically the setups on the games,JB26.

Dewey Decimal System heading #799 has books on all the gun sports. A cheap, accessible resource.,...
