Does anyone have or use a barrel made by Mossberg for the Remington 870? If so, is it any good. I am mainly looking at the 18.5" plain parkerized barrel. It looks to be quite a bit cheaper than a Remington made one.

Depends on who Mossberg had make the barrels for them, it might even have been made by Remington! Some Mossberg barrels are made in Mexico.

Shotgun manufacturers often do not have barrel making facilities and farm out the work to companies that strike barrels. This is more common than you might think, particularly amongst european makers.

I am told that there are only four barrel makers in Germany and that the major gun manufacturers make arrangements with these four companies to make their barrels.

Joe... before you buy direct from Mossberg..get ahold of a Cabelas or Bass Pro catalog....last I looked, they had the 18.5's starting at $79.99.....no personal experiance with them but am very temted myself.

Hit the next gun show the rolls around. I picked up a Mossberg 18.5" cyl bore with a bead sight for $30 at a show last year. You can find a lot of good deals if you have time to stop and talk to the vendors.

If you don't need new, check a gunshow or some of the classifieds on the net first. You should be able to find a used Remington barrel on the cheap.

With that said, I don' t see any reason why you shouldn't buy a Mossberg barrel for the Remington, if it is more in line with what you want you spend. Mossberg has been making shotguns for years, and I haven't heard any instances of there barrels blowing up or otherwise failing. If they(or their contractor) can make a good barrel for their product, there isn't any reason they can't make a good barrel for another product.
