View Full Version : The Next Georgia TFL Shoot (May/June)
Bud Helms
April 15, 2001, 06:54 AM
Well, it sounds like the Atlanta Shoot on April 14 went really well. 'Wish I could have been there. As I mentioned in that thread, we have a great private range here in middle GA, at Fort Valley. I'd like to invite you all for a day of braggin' and shootin' sometime during May or June.
The days that I know will be tied up are holidays and scheduled matches dates. The holidays are 13 May, Mother's Day, and 17 June, Father's Day. The days for scheduled matches are 5/12 May and 2/9 June, the first and second Saturdays of each month.
One of the things I'm most interested in finding out is if Sundays are possible. So here are the weekend dates (including Sundays) that, by my reckoning, are open for May and June 2001:
May 6(Sun) 19/20(Sat/Sun) 26/27(Sat/Sun)
June 3(Sun) 10(Sun) 16(Sat) 23/24(Sat/Sun) 30/31(Sat/Sun)
We have covered shooting sheds, but no running water or electricity. So, it's a picnic shoot.:)
You can email me at

As mentioned in the other thread, I'm interested.
Sunday's are fine for me......maybe even better since -everything- seems to happen on Saturday these days.
Does the Fort Valley range have pistol as well as rifle target stands. What would we need to bring? Targets and a staple gun? Sounds like this is a "bring your own" kind of place. I'm assuming that a dozen empty coke cans are not acceptable targets.:)
As for dates, in May the 20th looks good (if we can do a Sunday). In June the 10th, 16th, and 30th look good.
Let's get a few opinions on a good date (and if a Sunday will be OK) and set this thing up.

Joe,
It is definitely a bring your own type range. Coke cans are fine. We just pick up after ourselves. The only things that are forbidden are the obvious: glass, brick, range furniture ... :)
We have what we call an upper and lower range. Lower range is down on a hollow. The upper range has 50, 100, 150 and 200 meter berms. The lower range has 25, 50 and 100 meter berms. I do most of my shooting on the lower range. There are a couple of portable wooden target holders, but it you have a favorite, bring it. I'll have plenty there for us. Targets are something different. I'll have a truckload of cardboard for target backing. Everybody definitely has a favorite, so bring your own. Staple gun ... yes. Chairs, definitely bring some folding chairs, if you have them.
11B, 'hope you can make it.

April 16, 2001, 12:15 AM
Sensop,
Sounds good. Glad you'll be able to bring cardboard. If possible I'd like to ride the bike down there which means I can't pack too much along.
Paper targets and a staple gun is no problem. I might still have a few of those "exploding targets" left from about 8 years ago I will bring along if I can find them. (They don't allow me to use them at Advanced Bullets)
Side note: Best show I ever saw at the range was an exploding target stuck to a half empty can of carburator cleaner. When hit the can went flying 25 feet in the air, on fire and leaving a thick black smoke trail.:D Don't see that every day.
Is the raod going to this range paved or at least hard pack? Will I be able to manage getting a 1,000 pound motorcycle out there?

April 16, 2001, 06:30 AM
Joe,
What are you riding, a Road King Classic with the saddle bags full of gold?!
There is a short piece (1/4 mi) of hard-packed gravel. No problem. Tell me more about the exploding targets ..
If you are riding, why don't you let us four-wheelers bring the "stuff". Just bring GUNS (and ammo). I even have a couple of extra ear muffs.
'Looks like you can make about every weekend we have open, Tom. .

April 16, 2001, 09:09 PM
Sensop,
I ride an '85 Honda GoldWing. The bike itself is supposed to be 900 pounds but with "stuff" in the saddle bags it's easily pushing 1K.
You haven't experienced exploding targets? They are about 2 inches by 2 inches square with a red bullseye in the middle and an adhesive backing. If you hit the red part (even with a .22 LR) the taget blows up like a loud firecracker. Pretty good for ruining whatever it is stuck to.:)
I should have plenty of room to bring whatever I need on the bike. I won't be bringing the selection I took out to Advanced Bullets (damn near emptied the safe for that one) but I can fit at least 4 pistols in a case that fits in a saddlebag.
So far it looks like a Sunday might be OK. Hope we get some more input there.

Tom B, yes I really wanted to get in before the 4th. It looks like early June is good. Art, 'sure hope you can make it. I want to meet PJ too. 'Never met a real 11B before ...:D Hube, I look forward to hearing what you think of GA so far.
One thing I haven't heard from anyone is whether Sundays are particularly bad or good. If we have enough of the Faithful that want to come and shoot with us (and I hope not ALL heathens show up!), then the first two weekends of each month may be whacked. See my first post. One of the first two Sundays in June would be perfect. If not, then the 16th of June is the day. Did I mention that wives and girlfriends are welcome?
What say y'all?

There really is no prohibition in the range rules. The problem is that there is a neighborhood nearby. Really near. Even though we were there first, we try not to aggravate the locals unnecessarily. It's not a good location for it.

Spartacus,
Check email buddy. I withdraw the comments above concerning Class III usage. Normal safety precautions on the range. I was just ruminating out loud. Bring it on, you gun nut!
PJ11B3..., are you coming straight from Ft Benning? If so, it's a straight shot on Hwy 96, via Hwy 80 out of Columbus. At the Hwy 49 Bypass to the left (about three miles out of Fort Valley), Gun Club Road is on the right. Turn on to Gun Club Road (duh!). It's about a mile to the range from that point. Drive to the end of the pavement and keep going on the gravel. Get to the RR tracks, gate is just on the other side. I'll have signs posted.

Saturday June 16th works the best for me. What about starting time?
Bud Helms
April 28, 2001, 07:56 PM
Earlier is cooler. I plan on being there around 8 AM. But I don't have a one to two hour drive. A start time is a good idea however, because club rules require a locked gate at all times except on days when the public is invited ... like announced matches. Technically, this isn't a match. It is a private shoot of a member and his guests. It would ease the start up greatly if we could all meet within a 30 minute or one hour window. I need to stay at the gate while you all arrive because the range is about a quarter mile in from the gate. How about arrival between 8 and 9 AM? Anyone arriving after that can honk their horn and I will come let them in.

Tom, I'm starting to think you're just a tad in need of medical attention.;)
Maps can be viewed at Fort Valley Gun Club Map (http://members.home.net/rifleer/fvgcmap.doc). This is a map drawn in Word 97, don't puke. If anyone has trouble reading it, let me know.
The easiest access to Fort Valley, for those coming down from Atlanta is at Byron (Exit 155, I think). Take Hwy 49 south. The next exit is Hwy 96 (Exit 146). They both get you there if you follow the map. From Benning and points west its a straight shot coming in on Hwy 96. I assume those coming in from the east will either come in on Hwy 96 or via I-75.
Oops! Exit 146 is Hwy 247 Connector, not Hwy 96. As you travel south, the Byron exit is first (Exit 155), the Hwy 247 exit is next (Exit 146) and the Hwy 96 exit is last. I don't know the exit number.

The mule was only worth around $100. The Cajun decided to raffle him off; he sold 1,000 tickets at $1 each. The night before the raffle, the mule died. The drawing was held, anyway.
A buddy asked him how he got away with it. The reply was, "Well, after all, there was only one fella knew about it and got mad, and I gave him his money back!"

I need a decision too. This week is looking hectic in that I start my internship with Fulton County PD next week and have several papers due on Tuesday. I'm personally leaning towards the 16th right now, but that's just for selfish personal reasons; nothing a swift kick to the ass wouldn't cure. Y'all may have learned I'm a bit wishy-washy ;)
Hey Lightsped, Atlanta PD is ALWAYS hiring, that's where I'm plannning on going when I graduate assuming they can look over my slight nearsightedness. They have a great pay incentive for those with a degree which it sounds like you have. 35.5K for starters... not bad, eh? Don't forget that Marietta and Smyrna are often hiring as well, or you can look at Cobb if you don't mind wearing thoose goofy cowboy hats. Most of those guiys start you out at a little under 30K, but Cobb is a bit higher than 30K. I'll give you my local PD links:
http://www.atlantapd.org
http://www.cobbpolice.com
http://www.mindspring.com/~fcpd
http://www.cobbcounty.org/website/links.htm
That last link contains an official link to all the cities in Cobb... most of which have their own PD as well. Just go to "Municipalities" about half way down.
Let me know what you think.

Okay,
I've been away from my computer for the last four days.
Here's the simple version ...
Most of us have agreed on the 16th. Some of us cannot make it on the 16th, but can make the 10th. I intend to be there on both days, because I want you guys to come down and meet as many of each other as possible.
Art, sorry you're going to miss the get together. Maybe next time. I guess surgery at that age is a mixed blessing? I just spent Fri night through Monday afternoon with my 78 year old father. I don't get to see him very often, but I'm only four hours drive away. He's actually in pretty good health.
Lightsped, I understand you won't be able to make it. Good Luck. If you want to commute to Warner Robins, email me.
Edmund, we'll be on the lower range unless someone needs more than 100 yds. If another member can be there it will help. I've invited a few, but no commitment.
So, I will open the range at 0900 on the 10th and the 16th. Get there when you can.
The map to the range and the range layout is Here (http://members.home.net/rifleer/fvgcmap.doc). It is a word document, not an image, so you will be asked if you want to open it or save to disk. I'd open it and then save it. Let me know soon if you have problems reading it, so I can post in an another format.
I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

I will be there unless it is a frog strangler! Even if it does storm, if it looks like it will blow through, I will be there ... in which case I will have my Georgia Red Clay Clodhoppers on:D.

Wish I could come. I have to work this weekend (fri-sat-sun). I'd love to bring my new AR15 shorty and try it out. Maybe next time...

The 1st Annual Fort Valley Out Of Towner's Invitational Unlimited Mixed Gun Match was a great visit ... and a whole lot of powder was burned up!
It was a fine time! TFLers present were Spartacus, TomB, Spectre, Joe Klug, Edmund Rowe and yours truly.
Spartacus brought an Uzi ... my first time on one of those.
Spectre brought the Beast, a Mossberg bolt action 12 ga shotgun. It was beastly with three inch Federal 1 1/4 oz slugs! That sucker would leap right off the rest ... I had to lash it down with some parachute cord!!
TomB brought a sweet Browning Hi Power.
Joe Klug let me shoot his CZ97, but I liked the 75 better. That's the first time I've ever seen the 97. But the surprise for me was the Beretta in .45 ACP. I liked it! Very manageable, very accurate.
Edmund got out of his car with a .45 on each hip (Glocks?).
Lots of plastic out there today. But I held up the 1911 crusade with a 1991A1 Cmdr and a Mech Tech upper on a Springfield Mil Spec lower.
Someone shot a Makarov for the first time ... Joe? Another convert.
All were safe, hot and tired, come 5PM. Pics soon.

Spartacus is out like a light on my sofa. Something about a day of shooting that just tends to wear a body out. (Then again, maybe it's just the schnapps. ;))
Wow! After the potentential for gloom, we had a beautiful day. "The Beast" does indeed kick- I'm can't post long-I'm icing my shoulder!
Bud, thanks for the help with the sight-in and setting this up, and thanks to y'all for coming.

Just the six of us showed, but it was a good time. We talked about you guys ... just like we promised.:) We weren't disturbed from shoooting (or braggin') all day. 'Had the range to ourselves. Not even a club member showed up until we were pulling out.
Let's do it again once it cools off, say, October?

Sensop,
I was upholding the 1911 tradition also, with a Kimber Classic Gold Match. I like Joe's CZ's and am a Makarov convert now. Even though I've always considered DA/SA self loaders to be a perfect solution in desperate search of a problem.
It was great spending time with you folks. Definitely have to do it again.

I'm loosely planning on going up to Advanced Bullets next Saturday. I've got this Anti I'm tryin to get to go with me... I've convinced her it's a great hobby, and now she wants to try it.
She did the Shoot-no-shoot simulator at the Atlanta PD Academy, and now wants to do the real thing. Can you blame her? I just hope she gets the day off of work.

Sensop,
Thanks once again for setting that meet up for us. Like everyone else, I had a great time. It was well worth the 300+ mile round trip. And yes, I will have to seriously think about getting one of those Maks. It was a lot better of a shooter then I was expecting.
Setting up another meet down there in October might be a good idea. I'll do my best to make it. The FVGC is a great place. I couldn't believe we were the only ones out there on such a nice day.
One helpful tip for my fellow TFLers.......when someone posts directions to a place you need to go print them out right away. I made the mistake of thinking "I'll visit the thread the night before the meet and print them out then". Bad mistake on my part as the forum was down Friday night and Saturday morning. I spent about 45 minutes trying to find someone who could point me in the general direction of Fort Valley Gun Club. Luckily, I was able to find such a person and just got there a bit late.
Ben, If you want to meet at Advanced next Saturday I can probably be there around 1pm. I have an appointment at 10am that I really shouldn't miss.
