The first run of 901's are coming off the line in the next week or two and they're eager to get them out. I'm getting one to demo for the summer! I'm happy to answer any questions you have and I'll post a video range report afterwards. I was lucky enough to shoot this and the SCW at the NDIA conference last month and I'll say it shoots like a hot 5.56. Now realize I only fired 10 rounds through the 901 that day. They're shipping me the magwell adapter and some magazines this week. I have a 6940 that I will be using as the 5.56 upper conversion in the demo.

RE: 901 range report question submissions.
Keep them short and post 'em on this thread. No PM's please.
I won't do any destructive testing, so don't ask.
I will do mud, water and dust testing.
I will use an EoTech EXPS3-0 for close-in & a Trijicon ACOG or TR24G for distance.
I'll try a variety of bullet weights, if there's something specific you want to see, let me know.

I thought they were pushed back until 2013?

Things I would like to see:

-Weight unloaded and loaded.

-Fit/Function of PMag

-How does the switch between .308 & .223 go.

-Fit/Function of KAC pattern metal mags

-Recoil/Handling vs LMT MWS, KAC EMC, DPMS LR-308

-"Combat Course" handling/function like a 3-Gun competition or Carbine Class

-Accuracy evaluation with 10 shot groups at 300 - 500 yards.

I received a box from Colt today with the parts for the 901 and some marketing flyers.

Here's the magwell adapter. I attached it to my 6940 upper to show how it goes on. Then, it just slips into the magwell of the 901 to take the 5.56 magazines.

Very cool.
Looking forward to your test results.

Since you are from the same neck-of-the-woods, the Pacific NorthWET, maybe some testing in our liquid sunshine would be beneficial.
How's it perform in a drenching rain?

So I am guessing that Colt has their own design for .308 magazines, separate from the DPMS and AR10 design magazines.

I'm certainly interested in this new rifle, as I love the versatility it offers. If I ever fall into a large pile of money I may have to buy one.

Good to see the SP901 may see the light of day soon. I recently sold my SCAR 17s to buy the SP Colt. Hope I didn't make a mistake.

Cant wait to see a report. If she functions like she looks I may have to mortgage the house:o

It's certainly a tempting rifle. I love the idea of having one lower that can fit almost every upper out there. I definitely want one, but I may wait a while. Gun companies have a knack for coming out with things I want right after I buy something. They've been showing off some models with some very cool anodizing, so I'm waiting for them to expand their offerings.

Any idea on the street price?

Auto426
June 22, 2012, 01:44 PM
GrabaGun.com has one in their Colt listings, and while it's out of stock the price listed was a little over $1800. I'm sure the prices are going to be inflated for a while till supply can meet demand and all of the first adopters get their hands on one.

Crow Hunter
June 22, 2012, 02:45 PM
a little over $1800

I could do that.

They will dominate the market if this price pans out.

Nothing else close is less than $2,200 some even more.

OK guys, here's a little more gun ****.I cleaned it up and took a family photo with my 6940. Then I changed the upper and took a couple more. I'm going to the range on Thursday to do a video. I'm taking some extra time because I have a buddy of mine helping out as a surprise guest!

That is a fine looking rifle. I wonder what it would weigh if they took off some of that extra rail space.

I am really liking this rifle. My only concern is I have yet to see an auto loading rifle that is caliber & magazine convertible that isn't a jam-o-matic. However, this is Colt- one of the best gun companies in the world, so I'm not too worried.

Didn't they come out with some unique finish for that rifle at SHOT? It looked stunning! Easily one of the best looking finishes I've ever seen. Are they still going to release that finish? I don't see it on their website.

Doc Maker
June 27, 2012, 11:31 AM
From what I hear, they will offer three factory anodized finishes. FDE, OD and Vista trees. But it will be a long while before they do a full production run, maybe 1Q 2013. Just black for now.

Awesome video and awesome gun. That accuracy was impressive at 300 yards with NATO ball; very impressive.

Great, now I have another gun on my list....

Colt has done some great engineering on this SP901. I hope they have great success with it.

What does the SP901 weigh in 5.56 trim? In 7.62 trim?

Personally I'll keep my dedicated 5.56 and 7.62 AR's

I've recently started shopping for a .308 ar style rifle and had settled on an Lmt but now I'm thinking this may be a better option. Very keen to get my hands on one to check it out!!

I am surprised it is direct impingement vs short stroke piston operated.

There is a piston option. I don't know when it will be available though.
