My dad's RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX Remington Spartan has imprinted on the side of the gun 2 3/4 12 gauge. I assumed that to mean that it will only fit that shell and no larger. However, dad, trying to figure out if a box of shells were his the other day (they turned out to be 3 inch 00 magnums for my 870 Police Magnum) and dropped them in his gun. They fit perfectly. I tried it myself and closed the gun, they fit perfectly.

Since we have established that magnum shells fit this gun, are they safe to shoot? (from previous posts in this forum on Magnum shotgun shells, I would say the answer is yes). But, why would a right out of the factory gun not have 2 3/4 & 3 inch shells on the side if that is what they can fit?

What i was told is that shell measurement is the measure of the shell after it is fired, so an unfired 3" shell will fit in a gun chambered for 2 3/4". But if a 3" shell is put into a 2 3/4" chamber and fired, then when the shell opens up it opens into the forcing cone and creates dangerous pressure spikes. So if the spartan does have a 2 3/4" chamber then it is not safe to shoot 3" shells in it.

The chamber measurement is for FIRED shells, not loaded shells.

When the shell is fired the crimp that holds the shot in expands out to the full length of the shell.

Gun is not safe with 3" shells.

^ really? My dad's is brand new. Is there a difference between the 210 and 220 (there are two kinds of spartans right? I think dad's is 210)

Regardless of how it's measured, if the bbl is marked 2.75, do NOT shoot 3" in it, as this would be unsafe. It's marked how it's marked for a reason.

My new Spartan SPR 94 12 ga/.223 rem shoots 3.0" shells, however. Can't wait to go shoot it.
