Anyone ever used 777 in their 45-70? I have been loading smokeless for about 13 years now in my 45-70's and was wenting to try something different in my Marlins. I have been using 3031 for my different bullet weights. Been having awesome results with some 420grain hardcast flat nose bullets and was wanting to keep them in the 1600-1700 fps range. Is this possible with 777? I put some in a case to where the bullet would give mimimum compression and weighed the charge and came up with 55 grains of powder. Is this enough powder to get me the desired velocity? I did not want to compress too much. I have heard the blackpowder subs do not like compression like Goex does.

The original BP load was 70 grains. Couldnt tell you about the 777 tho...

I just got the Hogdon Basic reloaders Manual in the mail....

for 777 in Big Bold Letters

WARNING: NO COMPRESSION SHOULD BE USED WITH Triple Seven

All powder charges are measured by VOLUME

you can use one card wad filler of .030 between the base of the bullet and the powder charge.

It does list a loading for a 500g bullet #457125 at 55gr of 777 and a 845g LFP bullet at 60gr

45-70 Govt. 405 Gr. Cast LFP Triple Seven FFG 60.0 Gr. 1260 -
45-70 485 Gr. Cast LFP Triple Seven FFG 60.0 Gr. 1161 -

Thanks for the reply.
The listings are not very impressive. I am getting those velocities with Goex 2f.

I loaded black powder in modern 45/70 cases for a while before I gave up on it due to the case capacity limitations. Since 777 is supposed to be reduced by 15% from black powder, I'd think it would perform better than black at the volume a 45/70 case would hold.
