Russian boar hunt in Pa

Just got back from a russian boar hunt with my two friends. Great time but I was surprised how much gun these pigs need to take down. I was the first to get a shot i was using a 35 whalen with a 225gr nosler. My first shot was at about 100 yards put one behind the shoulder he took off I thought we find him about a hundred yards or so we trailed him over 500 yards he look find.Took my next shot at about 50 yards and that but him down. Both shots hit him. Next up my freind got a shot with his 44mag at 23 yards he hit him in the spine he when down but still tryed to get away on his front legs another shot got him in the spine he still was kicking a heart shot at 10 feet finished him.The next pig was shot a 50yards with a 30-06 with 165gr bullet behind his shoulder it just turned and looked at my friend like nothing happen 4 more shots finally got him down. The boar weighed between 180 and 240 tough animals

A 35 Whelan is certainly enough for pigs .The very similar 9.3x62 Mauser and 9.3x74R are favorites for pigs in Europe. But you still have to get good hits !

Well, I guess my .357 is out of the question. I was hoping I could use my 1894C rifle with .357 and a Blackhawk sidearm. :( I thought I read where a hardcast .357 would be sufficiant to bring down a 180# hog.

Were the Noslers partitions or ballistic tips? How far did they penetrate? I haven't started reloading yet for my Whelen and am thinking about the 225 partitions for bear/boar. Yea or nay?

You go to Tioga County for the hunt? I see their ads in the sporting magazines. Sounds like you had a great time. I have no experience hunting hogs (yet) so I won't provide my opinion on calibers and so forth.

Shoot that sounds like a blast. I wish we had wild hogs here in Washington state. I think the nearest place for hogs is Ca. Is that right?

Yes we did go to Tioga was a great time. I used the 225 grain ballistic tip it went clean thru.

I hunted this wild boar at Tioga last June. Had a great time amd met new friends! It was a running shot at about 70 yards. My 180 grain .308 bullet took him low in the chest and he was knocked down right away. But in a flash, he bounced to his feet and charged straight ahead for about 30 feet. Then the beast toppled over and made a loud roaring sound. An eerie wild sound filled with rage. I hustled over and finished the boar with a shot through the back of the skull with my revolver.

I'd hunt Tioga again! My guide was named Karl.

Texas has an abundance of hogs in all different weights. You can find a 5 lb. piglet up to a 600 lb. bruiser.

One thing I have learned is you need good bullets. I have not had great luck with the Ballistic Tips for the same reason as above. The best performance comes from bonded bullets or Barnes. I use Hornady .30 cal. 165 gr Interbonds and have been impressed with their results. They have outperformed the Partitions as far as dropping the hog quickly.

I have used nonbonded bullets and with lung shots or heart shots, they will run. With the Interbond they have dropped in their tracks. On hogs over
200 lbs., the bullet rarely exits, but completely destroys the chest cavity.

Back sometime after the War Between the States when I was a shavetail, I went boar hunting in the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee using my new Blackhawk .357 magnum.
I managed to put up a 150 lb boar at roughly 40 yards. The first round in the chest from the side put him down but he got up and it took a second shot in nearly the same place to finish him. A third was unnessary.:)
When the boar was dressed, one slug was found in the middle of the chest cavity and the other in the far side of the chest wall. Neither was mushroomed much but both were distorted.
The bottom line is that the .357 was certainly adequate for this particular boar. I'm not so sure that it would have been if it had been a much bigger one. Don't think I would want to repeat the process on a 300-400 lb boar with that pistol.:eek: :)

i run a 1280 acre Exotic Deer Ranch
and hogs breed like rats out here. i killed 32 of them last month. from 30 yards out to around 350 yards and all i use on them is a 22.250 with a Seirra 52 or 55 gr bthp Match bullet. only 1 round in 98% of them with head shots. dead bangers...
i have 100rds of pix of the hog kills.

i guess you could say i cheat. i have long range night CC/Cameras watching Deer feeders out from the house. the main one is 225 yards off the front porch. and a small one out the back 90 yards, and one off to the side about 70 yards.
i kill the crap out of coons at them too.
