What causes premature lock-back? My compact 1911 45 ACP handels my target loads without a problem but self defense loads (Proload 230 grain, Federal Hydrashock 230 grain and Speer JHP 230 grain) will occasionally lock back before the magazine is empty.
All help is appreciated!

Bill, with the heavier recoil and especially if you have an extended slide stop, inertia can cause the slide to lock back early. Also, you might inspect the inside portion of the slide lock for brass colored marks. This will mean that the nose of the bullet is contacting the stop causing it to engage. The fix for the 1st problem is to have a detent notch cut into the slide stop. The 2nd problem is corrected by filing the area marked by the bullets until they no longer touch it. George
