(Monday, July 29, 2002) -- Senator Bob Smith's bill to allow pilots
to use firearms to protect themselves, their passengers, and their
crew could be voted on as early as this week.

Sen. Smith's bill, S. 2554, currently has 25 bipartisan sponsors and
cosponsors, including liberal Democratic Senators Barbara Boxer (CA)
and John Kerry (MA).

But Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is still on the fence regarding
this critical legislation.

It is crucial that you call or e-mail Senator Hutchison within the
next 48 hours. Urge her to cosponsor S. 2554 NOW!

At least two times in the last year, federal tests of airport
screening have shown that EVEN CURRENT DRACONIAN PROCEDURES ARE
INEFFECTUAL IN STOPPING TERRORISTS.

In one test, fully half of the guns, knives, and bombs being carried
by testers eluded airport screeners.

We cannot wait until an F-16 is forced to shoot a commercial airline
out of the air.

Before that horrible eventuality arrives, we must give commercial
pilots the ability to use firearms as a last line of defense to
prevent the destruction of the aircraft.

ACTION: Please contact Sen. Hutchison and ask her to cosponsor
S. 2554. You can reach her at 202-224-5922 or toll-free at
877-762-8762 by phone, or you can post your comments at
http://www.senate.gov/~hutchison/e-mail.htm on her website.

----- Pre-written message -----

Dear Senator Hutchison,

I am concerned that you have not yet cosponsored S. 2554, the armed
pilots bill introduced by Senator Bob Smith.

In two federal tests, airport screening procedures have proved
utterly ineffective in stopping terrorists.

Pilots must be given one last opportunity to save their planes
before an F-16 shoots three hundred innocent passengers out of the
sky.

I urge you to cosponsor S. 2554. Please let me know how you intend
to act on this issue.

Sincerely,

Don't just send Email- call and FAX.

Email, because it is so easily spammed, carries far less weight. Grassroots efforts are moving this issue, make your voice count, grab that phone and let them know what you think.

Thank you for your support!

Another sent, and I'm going to call her office later.

By the way, does anyone know where she stands on the renewal of the "Assault Rifle" atrocity that is due to expire in 2004?

Told her office that if she votes against arming the pilots, I will actively campaign against her. The lady that answered the phone acted like that was about the 1000th call she had received that day. She wrote down my comments and then I hung up.

2 things:

1) I called a few minutes ago, and the receptionist seemed disgusted/overwhelmed, as if she's been getting a lot of calls on this issue lately. Good!

2) Has anyone posted this to FreeRepublic? There are lots of Texans over there, and surely this will add to the number of calls that KBH gets on this issue.

Had some trouble getting through due to heavy traffic on the phone lines; but when I talked to the receptionist and asked her to pass on my comments in support of S. 2554, she answered "You and me both!". :D

I searched FreeRepublic and found nothing, so I posted the article myself. I hope it helps.

Emailed and called.

I think her staff are getting annoyed. They were quite terse on the phone.

Good work guys-

Some interesting news from the WSJ- they report that Senator Hollings is going to allow a vote in his committee to send S 2554 to the Senate Floor. This is a direct result of grassroots efforts to get the armed pilot program passed.

The facts are still developing, so keep the pressure on! We may have 60-70 votes in favor of this, but still have a long way to go!

Best,

Grinch

What's up with these Senators? There was a blurb on FoxNews t'other night about Hollings not allowing the wife of a pilot that was abourd a WTC-missile to testify regarding arming the pilots. I'm sure Frits is PO'd to still be the junior Senator from SC at his advanced age, but I thought SC was a very gun-friendly State. Can anyone offer opinions regarding red-state Senators obstructing this? For Pete's sake, even BOXER is for!!!

This should be a no-brainer for the illustrous senators. The first time that the USAF has to shoot down an airliner, any senator who voted against arming pilots will be politically dead.
Even Boxer has this figured out. W needs to sit up and take notice............

Texas has been putting out a lot of "pseudo" conservatives lately. Hutchison's just another one of them.
